Adaptive Backoff Algorithm for IEEE 802.11 DCF under MPR Wireless Channels

چکیده
As a result of the recent advances in physical (PHY) layer communication techniques, it is possible to receive multiple packets at the receiver concurrently. This capability of a receiver to decode multiple simultaneous transmissions is known as multipacket reception (MPR). In this paper, we propose a simple Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for an MPR wireless channel, where we modify the backoff procedure as a function of number of ongoing transmissions in the channel. Our protocol is backward compatible with the IEEE 802.11 DCF protocol. The performance analysis of the proposed protocol is carried out using extensive simulations and it is compared with some of the existing MPR MAC protocols. The proposed mechanism improves the throughput and delay performance of the IEEE 802.11 DCF.

Understanding the Impact of Mobility to the Performance of the IEEE 802.11 DCF
IEEE 802.11 series standards have been widely used to specify the MAC mechanism in wireless networks. The 802.11 DCF has not taken into account of the mobility of wireless stations, instead, it is defined based on the assumption that the mobility is not present or is very low. Mobility of wireless stations downgrades the saturation performance of the IEEE 802.11 DCF. This paper made its efforts...
متن کاملDesign and Analysis of an Adaptive Backoff Algorithm for IEEE 802.11 DCF Mechanism
This paper presents an adaptive backoff algorithm for the contentionbased Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) of the IEEE 802.11 standard. Relying on on-line measurements of the number of sources, the algorithm, called Adaptive BEB, judiciously sets the size of the minimal contention window to adapt to the congestion level in the shared medium. The paper also provides an extension to Adapti...

IEEE 802.11 is the most popular standard used in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). Several Markov chain models have been developed to evaluate and to enhance the performance of the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) protocol. However, the existing models cannot accurately predict the performance of the network. Also, the existing models suffer with high packet collisions re...
متن کاملPerformance Analysis of Binary Negative-Exponential Backoff Algorithm in IEEE 802.11a WLAN under Erroneous Channel Condition
IEEE 802.11 is the most famous protocol for implementation of wireless local area network (WLAN). To access the medium, IEEE 802.11 uses carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) mechanism, called distributed coordination function (DCF). Although DCF uses binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm to avoid frame collisions, wireless resources are wasted due to a lot of co...
متن کاملOptimal Constant-Window Backoff Scheme for IEEE 802.11 DCF in Single-Hop Wireless Networks Under Finite Load Conditions
Existing backoff scheme’s optimization of IEEE 802.11 DCF MAC protocol consider only saturated networks or asymptotic conditions. In real situations, traffic is bursty or streamed at low rates so that stations do not operate usually in saturated regime. In this work, we propose and analyze a backoff enhancement for IEEE802.11 DCF that requires information only about the network size and that is...
